Nicaragua Sanitation Project
The Nicaragua Sanitation Program was focused on designing and building latrines for the community of Cuyali in the Madriz department of Nicaragua. The community reached out to EWB as their latrines, which have been used for longer than their intended lifespan, have been breaking down, resulting in families sharing latrines. Furthermore, the river near the community consistently floods the community, including the areas where latrines are situated. As a result, people in the community have been getting sick due to poor hygiene.
Design
The Project group was in the assessment segment of the project and was working with the EWB Nicaragua Country Office, an NGO, UNAG and the community themselves to create a sustainable solution for the residents of Cuyali. As a project, we wanted to put as much effort into hygiene education as latrine design to solve the problem from the root. Unfortunately this project was closed out by EWB-USA.
